AASCU STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA'S EXECUTIVE ACTIONS TO REDUCE GUN VIOLENCE

America’s state colleges and universities are learning and research communities comprised of more than five million students, faculty and staff. Preventing crime and maintaining a safe learning and working environment are important obligations of campus officials. The epidemic of gun violence in our society, however, regularly overpowers the efforts of colleges and universities to provide the safe setting that parents, students and employees deserve and expect.

The actions announced by the president today represent reasonable steps that allow for responsible gun ownership, but make it more difficult for criminals, terrorists, and other dangerous people to obtain ready access to guns. AASCU supports actions that endeavor to make public state colleges and university campuses safer for everyone.
