We applaud President Obama’s continued and consistent commitment to higher education as a federal and national priority, a commitment for which we are grateful and which was once again on display in his last State of the Union address.
The president quite correctly and concisely articulated the problem of college costs as the next challenge he intends to take on; we stand ready to work with him and with Congress. The underlying cause of cost escalation in public higher education, where the vast majority of
Americans access college, is state disinvestment. We look forward to ushering in a new federal-state affordability partnership as the linchpin of broad, affordable access to quality higher education.
