Project Description:The Center for Cancer Disparities Research is housed at the California State University Fullerton (CSUF), which is a comprehensive minority-serving institution located in Southern California. The Center for Cancer Disparities Research at CSUF was established in 2006 to address the increasing burden of health disparities, especially in cancer. Cancer is the second most common cause of death, with nearly one in four deaths caused by cancer nationwide.
- Facilitate the development of community-university partnerships that understand and address the many cancer health disparities in the county.
- Educate students, faculty and community members about cancer disparities and equity.
- Contribute to the science of reducing cancer health disparities via dissemination of evidence-based best practices to scientific audiences.
- Since 2006, the center has employed community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles via partnerships with 13 community-based nonprofit agencies, four university/academic institutions, and four medical centers. The Center has received numerous grant awards from the National Cancer Institute and other funders for research activities. Further, 12 peer-reviewed publications and 56 peer-reviewed conference presentations have resulted from research at the Center.
- Center faculty and community partners will continue to work on new research projects and dissemination vehicles (e.g., 11 manuscripts under review in peer-reviewed journals).
Challenges/Problems Encountered:First, given the high volume of extramural funding that is regularly obtained by center faculty, one ongoing challenge is coordinating grant development (pre-award) and grant monitoring/implementation (post award) with two separate entities (Office of Grants and Contracts for pre-award, Auxiliary Services Corporation for post award) at this university. CCDR staff have worked closely with staff at both entities to develop and train staff on pre-award and post award processes to ensure seamless activities. Second given the large number of community partners involved in the Center’s research, it is an ongoing challenge to regularly meet and apprise them of the center’s activities and accomplishments.
Evaluation Approach:The success of the center’s activities is measured with the following metrics: a) number of community, university and clinical partnerships; b) number of collaborative research proposals submitted, and number of grants received; c) number and quality of peer-reviewed presentations and publications; d) number and quality of community-based presentations and reports; and e) number of students, faculty and community members trained on cancer-related health disparities and equity. Specific research projects also employ their own evaluation designs and methods.
Potential for Replication:The center’s methods and measures are highly transferable to any academic institution that is similarly motivated to work in collaboration with local communities to define, address, and evaluate evidence-based approaches to cancer health equity.
