8th Annual ADP National Meeting
Agents and Architects of Democracy: Moving from Rhetoric to Reality
June 17-19, 2010 The Westin Providence
Register
The American Democracy Project (ADP) has been created to identify and develop strategies and approaches to prepare all undergraduates to be informed, engaged citizens for our democracy. Yet as a recent study by our colleagues at AAC&U found, a gap exists between aspirations about civic engagement and actual campus practice. The question is how can we work to create “institutional intentionality” in our universities, moving from pockets of excellence that affect a few students to a broad effort that reaches all students? This question has animated ADP since its inception. Our theme this year reflects that commitment: “Agents and Architects of Democracy”
For the past seven years, the American Democracy Project has brought together faculty members, staff, student affairs professionals, students, senior university administrators, community members, and partner organizations for an annual conference that explores the role of universities in preparing the next generation of informed, engaged citizens for our democracy. Last year, more than 400 participants joined us in Baltimore. This year, we plan to gather in the historic city of Providence, Rhode Island.
The 2010 American Democracy Project National Meeting is a rich collection of large and small group sessions, presentations, discussions, and other events.
We’ll begin with a series of pre-conference sessions on Thursday, June 17th, featuring the work of our Civic Engagement in Action initiatives, including:
- Political Engagement Project
- Deliberative Polling
- America’s Future
- Stewardship of Public Lands
- 7 Revolutions
- Civic Agency
- eCitizenship
The formal conference begins at 4:00 pm with a keynote address by Elizabeth Coleman, President of Bennington College. Coleman was responsible for the major restructuring of Bennington College that resulted in creating an institutional focus on civic engagement and the fundamentals of liberal education. Following this keynote is the opening reception.
Friday and Saturday will be filled with a combination of exciting plenary speakers, breakfast breakouts, featured and concurrent sessions, ending with a gala closing on Saturday night.
Please join us for a spectacular event, designed to inform, engage, and inspire.
