My First Generation Story
Even if you’re going through a rough time, it’s important to keep a positive outlook on life. I think I do a pretty good job of always looking on the bright side of a situation, or at least trying to stay happy.
I grew up in Philadelphia and went to a charter high school; my mom constantly reminded me that the only thing I should be worrying about was getting good grades. Being the oldest of six kids, it was important that I set a good example for my younger brothers and sisters. This wasn’t always easy, especially since we didn’t have a lot of money. At one point I got into a little trouble with the law. Long story short, I was trying to raise money for my family. I’m not justifying it…but it’s not like I was doing it just to do it. But since then I’ve been on the straight and narrow. I want to follow the best path I can and show my family that things can be different.
When it was time for me to plan my future, my mom and my grandma told me that I needed to go to college. I really wanted to play football, so I agreed and was accepted to Penn State and Bloomsburg Universities. In the end, I chose Bloomsburg University because I could actually play on the football team, instead of just sit on the bench.
Like most people, I had a hard time adjusting my freshman year. It was the first time my family was without me, and they were struggling. I was my mom’s backbone at home, so when I started school, I was always getting phone calls from her and my brothers begging me to settle a fight or fix a problem. It wasn’t an ideal situation, but I got through it. I love my family. And even though things haven’t always been easy, they’ve always been supportive and still are.
Now I’m about to finish school. Even though I struggled at first and things weren’t easy for my family, I’ve managed to be an overall happy person. I’m really proud of my accomplishments with the Husky Ambassadors. We’re a group of students that represents the student body at alumni events and other university activities. I’m always excited to represent the university that has helped me out so much along the way.
