The president’s first State of the Union address was an opportunity to break the stalemate on a DACA solution and on federal budget discussions by paving a viable path forward. Regrettably, the president did not provide a roadmap workable to all parties, leaving the 1.9 million Dreamers in limbo and the country on the cusp of yet another federal shutdown. We are also disappointed by the absence of a specific vision for higher education at a time when the nation needs an educated citizenry more than ever to remain competitive.
We will continue to work with the administration and Congress to fix DACA as quickly as possible, finally pass a budget for the current fiscal year, and improve federal higher education programs.
