• Regulation of Postsecondary Distance Education

    On May 23, 2012, the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) and the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) announced the creation of a commission to examine the quality and regulation of distance education. The Commission on Regulation of Postsecondary Distance Education is tasked with making recommendations on appropriate government oversight and consumer protection. Its primary aim is to focus on cost and inefficiencies that institutions face when complying with various state laws and regulation. The Commission will be chaired by The Honorable Richard Riley, former U.S. Secretary of Education and Governor of South Carolina.

    AASCU is well-represented on the Commission through the service of George Ross, President of Central Michigan University, and Meg Benke, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (and acting President effective September 1) at Empire State University (NY). In addition, Bob Moran, AASCU’s Director of Federal Relations and Policy Analysis, will serve as an observer. AASCU and APLU are in the process of gathering an Advisory Committee to provide input and feedback to the Commission. AASCU’s co-chair on this Advisory Committee will be George Ross.
