New Presidents Academy
(NPA) is a yearlong program designed to support newly appointed presidents and chancellors as they begin their roles as academic leaders. In addition to monthly virtual learning and networking sessions, this year’s NPA included a four-day, in-person gathering
on July 27–31 in Carlsbad, CA.
The enhanced NPA program brought together
28 new presidents and chancellors across the country to support their practical orientation to the presidency. We covered a wide range of topics, including crisis management, the nature of the presidency, financial management, the role of presidents in student success, and more. Moreover, we
left Carlsbad having created a strong community of support among the new presidents and faculty, which we know will be an invaluable resource our new presidents can lean on throughout their careers.
We want to say a special thank you to the AASCU presidents who volunteered their time and expertise to invest in this new generation of college presidents as members of our NPA faculty:
The cohort will continue to meet virtually for more impactful programming through November 2022 and will come together again in person for an abbreviated program at the
AASCU 2022 Annual Conference. Additionally, all participants will be paired with an experienced president to help further their professional development.
“Fantastic. The presentations and resources provided really lay the foundation on how we can look to put our best foot forward.” – Milagros Peña, President, Purchase College, State University of New York
“NPA is an absolute must for all new college and university presidents. The depth of knowledge of the faculty and laser focus on mission-critical best practices for success are extremely valuable. The intentionality and rich diversity of the NPA faculty and cohort members also speaks volumes about AASCU’s preeminent
role in shaping the future of higher education.” – Ericke Cage, President, West Virginia State University
“Absolutely amazing. The right experience at the right time. I can see tangible ways that this is going to help me accelerate my transition, listen more deeply, and advance the work among a network of equity-minded colleagues.” – John Hoffman, President, Bemidji State University (MN) and Northwest Technical College (MN)
