WASHINGTON, July 14, 2020 — While I am pleased that the administration has wisely chosen to withdraw its unworkable guidance on international students, much damage has been done to the reputation of the United States as a welcoming and reliable educational destination. Last week’s sudden policy change was only the most recent in a series of ill-advised policies on international education. To remedy the harm, I urge the administration to extend additional flexibility to student visa applicants to enable those currently outside the U.S. to enter the country and start or resume their studies regardless of their mode of delivery. AASCU continues to support the more than 1.1 million international students that are vital and important members of our academic communities across campuses in the United States.
American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) is a Washington, D.C.-based higher education association of nearly 400 public colleges, universities, and systems whose members share a learning- and teaching-centered culture, a historic commitment to underserved student populations, and a dedication to research and creativity that advances their regions’ economic progress and cultural development. These are institutions Delivering America’s Promise of Opportunities for All.
