Anna Poteat (2017)
My First Generation Story
My name is Anna Poteat, and I am a senior at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). UNCG is a place where I have been able to explore new interests and improve the skills I previously developed.
Being a first generation college student has empowered and encouraged me to finish my undergraduate degree. I am proud to say that I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography on May 12, 2017. After four years of hard work, dedication and service, I will be the first in my family to have a degree.
I decided to attend UNCG because I honestly did not know what I wanted to study, and I didn’t know how to navigate the college experience. I figured staying close to home would allow me to help my family financially, and would allow me to explore my academic interests. After my first semester at UNCG, I fell in love with the campus. I quickly became involved with orientation, leadership & service learning, and intercultural engagement. I began spending more time on campus and getting to know the community. Many of the administrators, staff members and faculty on campus are first generation college students!
I was surrounded by people that were invested in my success as a student. I was also surrounded by an atmosphere of diversity where I was able to experience different cultures and languages without leaving campus. Being a first generation college student gave me a unique lens with which to view college, and it also inspired my path post-graduation.
In the fall I will be returning to UNCG to pursue a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs. I have a passion for helping first generation students and their families transition into the university community. I want to educate and empower these families to take charge of their college investment. I want to empower this community by preparing them with the knowledge needed to be successful in college. Simply put, I would like to equip students to be their own advocates on campus.
Being a first generation college student has changed my life, and I hope to be a positive influence in the lives of others in my future career!
