More than a week ago at George Mason University, Secretary DeVos unveiled a plan for broad consultation before the Department of Education issues new direction around Title IX enforcement. During her speech, Secretary DeVos displayed sensitivity to the plight of victims and expressed a commitment to fairness of
institutional processes for all parties.
While today’s guidance represents improvements on a number of fronts, it also raises concerns on others. We expect that the department will undertake an open, good faith process with all stakeholders in search of consensus around fair, timely and effective Title IX enforcement.
We stand ready to work with all parties to that end, and our member institutions remain committed to practices that prevent and combat sexual violence on campus.
