Combating Factionalism: Guiding Students to Reflect on Their Civic Identity and Habits in Global Contexts
As factionalism and societal tensions rise both in the U.S. and abroad, the impact on students participating in global learning opportunities—whether through education abroad, virtual exchanges, or international student programs—is profound. While some students grapple with issues like polarization, inequity, marginalization, climate change, and authoritarianism in isolation, others may react more openly, intensifying divisions. Both types of responses can perpetuate factionalism instead of fostering inclusion and understanding.
In this session, we will explore the crucial role of global and international educators in mentoring students to navigate these complex experiences. By expanding beyond the intercultural lens, we will address the importance of guiding students to reflect on the civic dimensions of their global learning experiences. Participants will engage with strategies to support students in turning these challenges into thoughtful, situationally appropriate actions that foster both civic engagement and intercultural understanding.
Who Should Attend?
- International education and study abroad professionals interested in fostering civic engagement
- Faculty and administrators involved in global learning initiatives
- Student affairs professionals seeking to support students in addressing polarization and factionalism
- Educators looking to enhance intercultural and civic development in their students
