Javier Cevallos serves as a 2022-2023 president-in-residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Education at Harvard University (MA). He became president of Framingham State University (MA) in 2004, where he served until his retirement in June 2022. Cevallos began his career as an assistant professor of Spanish at the University of Maine before moving to the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass), where he served as a professor and faculty advisor to the provost. In 1996, he was selected as an American Council on Education Fellow and spent his fellowship at Wesleyan University (CT). Upon returning to UMass, Cevallos became the Spanish and Portuguese Studies department chair and was appointed vice chancellor for student affairs, a post he held until 2002 when he became president of the Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Cevallos was a commissioner for the New England Commission of Higher Education and has served on the AASCU Board of Directors, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Presidents Council, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation Board of Directors, and the Campus Compact Board of Directors. Cevallos earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
