Carl S. Pettis

Carl S. Pettis is the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Alabama State University (ASU). He is also a professor of mathematics in the university’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Pettis is a proud alumnus of ASU. After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at ASU, Pettis received his doctorate in mathematics from Auburn University in 2006. He has since published a number of research articles in the area of design theory.
Pettis has done substantial work related to securing grants to advance the mission of ASU and to assist students. He is the principal investigator (PI) for the ASU GEAR-UP initiative and the ASU Mental Health Service Professional Program, which are funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Pettis also serves as the PI for the Preventing School Violence Program, which is funded by the Department of Justice. Additionally, he is a co-PI for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Greater Alabama Black Belt Region Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation and the NSF INCLUDES Alliance.
