As Montclair State University’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, Junius Gonzales leads the university’s programs for teaching, research, scholarship, and creative inquiry and service in ten schools and colleges and is responsible for academic planning, initiatives in teaching and learning, faculty and academic staff development, and the libraries. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the New York Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 2021 Educational Excellence Award and has served on federal agency advisory committees (e.g., Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) and for higher education association committees (e.g., APLU). His research interests include mental health disparities among the Latinx population and non-cognitive factors that influence college student success. He has received $15 million in research funding from sources that include the National Institutes of Health, the CDC, and the Gates Foundation and published more than 50 scholarly papers and book chapters. Gonzales has held high-level leadership roles in academia, federal government, and the private sector. He holds degrees from Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, and the University of Maryland.
