Meeting the Urgent Needs of Today’s Student: How to Modernize Your Student Success Strategy 

We’ll begin the day by examining three trends shaping the student success landscape over the next decade: K-12 learning disruption, mental health, and staff turnover—and offer guidance on how your institution can weather these trends. This session will include a deep dive on improving mental health support, including the role technology should play in coordinating between people and offices across campus to support student wellbeing.   

Despite higher ed’s focus on success and equity, graduation rate disparities between all students and Black and Latino men persist. In this session we’ll review new research on how institutions can more proactively contribute to Black and Latino men’s retention, graduation, and belongingness. We’ll also share foundational and progressive tactics you can use to help Black and Latino men build and nurture the peer and mentor relationships that are crucial to their success.  

This session will explore what today’s students expect from their higher ed experience and how you can deliver it. From enrollment to peer engagement to career preparation, college and university leaders are investing time and resources to build personalized and tech-enabled experiences across the student lifecycle. We’ll discuss how today’s student expectations are being shaped by the consumer economy and offer examples of institutions designing new experiences.  

We will close the day with forward-looking questions to help you prioritize how to bring the ideas discussed across the day to life.

• Stay home if you feel unwell or have any COVID-19 symptoms or test positive for COVID-19.  We recommend attendees wear masks while traveling to and from the event and follow COVID-19 safety practices in the days leading up to the event. 
• We strongly encourage attendees to take a rapid antigen COVID-19 test before traveling and before arriving to AASCU convenings.

Onsite during the event  

• Masks are recommended and will be available at the registration desk. 

• If you are experiencing cold or COVID-19 symptoms please be respectful and wear a mask.  
• Self-administered COVID-19 rapid antigen tests will be available at the registration desk. We encourage participants test themselves upon arrival before joining the conference. 
• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol  
• Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands  
• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Throw used tissues in the trash. 

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes. 
• If you feel unwell, develop symptoms of COVID-19, or test positive for COVID-19 at any time during the convening, seek medical care and do not attend the meals or gatherings.  
• If you test positive during the conference, please notify AASCU staff by emailing meetings@aascu.org.
