Managing Your Pace

Session description: New presidents tend to work excessive hours the first one-to-two years of their presidency, which is expected as they develop support from their base and get to understand the campus culture. However, many new presidents neglect their physical and emotional well-being during this period and beyond! How you manage your pace during your presidency will be discussed with many tips for survival!

Speaker:

  • John Anderson, NPA program coordinator and former president, Millersville University (Pa.)

Date: Nov. 2, 2020

Time: 4–6 p.m. ET

Strategic Vision/Institutional Change

Session description: You may be inheriting an existing strategic plan or have the opportunity to lead the campus in creating a new vision and plan. This is your chance, as a new president, to involve the campus community in discussions about student success and a new future. The outcome will involve change … are you prepared to lead the campus through that change?

Speaker:

  • Steve Turner, president, Northeastern State University (Okla.)

Date: Dec. 7, 2020

Time: 4–6 p.m. ET

Diversity and Inclusion

Session description: Diversity and inclusion unfortunately remain topics in which new presidents will be actively involved. Moving from diversity to inclusion will be discussed as well as the role of the president in addressing issues of racial and social injustice on campus.

Speakers:

  • TBD

Date: Jan. 25, 2021

Time: 4–6 p.m. ET

Huang Guiyou“A high quality, well-organized NPA. A truly great learning experience.”
–Guiyou Huang - Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
Brad Mortenson“The New Presidents Academy is a transformative experience to ground me in the duties of the presidency as well as build a strong and willing network among the faculty and colleague presidents.”
–Brad Mortensen - Weber State University (Utah)
Dwight WatsonThanks to the faculty for their vision, wisdom, and integrity.”
–Dwight Watson - University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
Bonnie Irwin“The cohort model of the New President's Academy provided us with a community of new colleagues and friends that I will rely on in the hard times and celebrate with in the good times. The intense week-long format allows for reflection while fitting in a time space where even a busy new president can get away from the office. The information was specific and relevant to what I am facing as a new chancellor, and the honesty and authenticity of the faculty gave me confidence that I, too, will succeed in this role.”
–Bonnie Irwin - University of Hawaii at Hilo
