AASCU’s 24th MLI Cohort Convenes in Washington, DC
“This has been the most rewarding experience I have ever experienced in my professional career. I will never forget what I have learned.” A powerful testimonial from a member of the 2023 MLI cohort as the MLI Institute concluded in Washington earlier this month.
This year’s program focused on what it means to be a high-definition leader. The cohort explored:
- What it means to lead with your values—They heard from AASCU member presidents who discussed their role in advancing democracy and explored a tool to identify the gap between who we are and who want to be.
- The skillsets needed for the role of president –The cohort explored financial management, fund raising and friend raising, and working with boards and trustees.
- What it means to be equity-centered – Author and scholar Ibram X. Kendi returned to MLI and shared what presidents should consider when designing an equity-centered campus. Authors Gina Garcia and Cia Verschelden helped the cohort identify the key gaps between how most colleges and universities operate and how they should operate with a focus of creating a sense of belonging on campuses.
The cohort will continue to meet virtually for more impactful programming through November and will regroup in person in March 2024 for the closing program. In addition, each member will be paired with a current sitting president as their mentor.
Special thanks to the MLI Executive Steering Committee, who make up the dedicated MLI faculty. These dynamic leaders give their time and expertise to invest in the next generation of college presidents and senior-level administrators.
This will be the 24th cohort in MLI’s history and they will graduate in 2024.
