WASHINGTON, August 2, 2022 – On behalf of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) community, I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Edward M. Penson. Penson served as a trusted adviser and respected education consultant to higher education leaders and to AASCU.
More than 40 years ago, he founded Penson Associates, Inc., to support institutional leaders in navigating a wide range of organizational and strategic challenges facing higher education. In time, his consultancy established the foundation of AASCU Consulting, previously known as the AASCU-Penson Center for Professional Development and helped to position it as the widely respected consultancy it remains today.
Penson drew firsthand from his own experiences as a higher education leader, including serving as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, president of Salem State University, and as a faculty member and administrator at Ohio University.
He will be remembered for his counsel, leadership, and commitment to higher education.
