2022 Academic Affairs Summer Meeting

2022 Academic Affairs Summer Meeting
Attendees at AASM 2022
Attendees at AASM 2022

Campuses that are serious about helping their students succeed can no longer create solutions without meaningful input of students.

The 2022 Academic Affairs Summer Meeting—took place July 21–24, in Portland, Oregon— and  explored the theme “Through the Eyes of Students: Leading the Student-Centered Campus.”

In recent years, colleges and universities, striving to be “student-ready,” have become more responsive to the needs of their students to help them succeed. As a result of this student success work, they have become more attuned to the voices of their students. As the student body on many campuses continues to be more diverse than the faculty, staff, and leadership of the campus, it is more important than ever to have reliable and consistent ways of listening to the diversity of student voices.

Who should participate?

  • Chief student affairs officers
  • Assistant and associate provosts
  • Assistant and associate vice presidents
  • Student affairs personnel
  • Directors
  • Deans
  • Assistant and associate deans
  • Department chairs
  • Program coordinators

How you’ll benefit.

  • Learn how to ensure student voices of all types are heard and their concerns are addressed
  • Insights on involving students in design and assessment of curriculum and student success work
  • Discuss ways to make sure that students feel safe expressing their views
Program highlights

Our program aims to explore and answer questions relevant to today’s students.

  • How might faculty include students in the design and assessment of curriculum?
  • What are the most effective and reliable ways of evaluating instruction?
  • How do we involve students in student success work?

12:30–2:30 p.m.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

Strengthening Democracy: Putting Students at the Center

This is a treacherous moment for democracy in America. The dangerous polarization and divisions that we see throughout our country are being played out on our campuses. Students are being asked to navigate an increasingly polarized landscape where they feel isolated and disconnected from democratic structures and where partisanship and misinformation impedes their ability to address key public policy issues and be fully engaged citizens. Join us as for a hands-on workshop to discuss strategies, programming, and resources to help you tackle the greatest challenges to our democracy and provide opportunities to engage students, so they are equipped with the knowledge, skills and experiences to be informed and engaged, ready to tackle current and future societal issues and create a more equitable democracy.

  • Catherine Copeland, Director, American Democracy Project, AASCU
  • Peg Gray-Vickrey, Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Texas A&M University-Central Texas
  • William J. McKinney, Senior Advisor for Regional Campus Affairs, Indiana University
  • Felice Nudelman, Associate Vice President, Academic Innovation and Transformation, AASCU
Academic Program Evaluation: Impact on DEI

Facilitated by Gray Associates

This session will summarize best practices in program evaluation and management and address an often-overlooked aspect of program evaluation: the impact of program choices on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will illustrate the demographic imbalances by program and their effects on student success and institutional finances. We will suggest a formula to track progress on DEI throughout the student lifecycle from admissions, through program selection, graduation, and employment outcomes. We will share a comprehensive model institutions can use to estimate the cost of implementing an equitable student success initiative and explore measurement of equity in your academic portfolio.

  • Robert Gray Atkins, CEO and Founder, Gray Associates
  • Tanjula Petty, Assistant Provost for Student Success and Special Initiatives, Alabama State University
3–5 p.m.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

The Pandemic Ripple Effects: Preparing for Long-Term Impacts on Student Success and Equity

Facilitated by EAB
Higher education will be struggling to overcome the disruption of the pandemic long after other parts of our economy rebound, yet many of us still hope things will simply snap back to normal. Concerns around social disengagement and mental health combined with massive disruptions in transfer enrollments and K-12 learning could challenge college completion and equity for as much as a decade. In this interactive conversation, EAB managing director Ed Venit will answer your questions about the decade ahead and lay out data and strategies you can use to make the case for necessary investments in the coming years.

  • Ed Venit, Managing Director, EAB
The Transfer Playbook: Strategies to Advance Transfer Outcomes
Facilitated by The Aspen Institute Join experts from Aspen and AASCU for an interactive session in which participants will 1) reflect on the transfer student experience; 2) discuss and identify specific institutional and structural barriers that relate or lead to inequitable experiences of students throughout the transfer process; and 3) gain insight on practice reform strategies that can strengthen their transfer partnerships. The session will draw on evidence-based practices and lessons learned to date through the Aspen-AASCU Transfer Intensive. Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of how they may work with potential two-year partners to improve and make more equitable the transfer student experience.
