Campuses that are serious about helping their students succeed can no longer create solutions without meaningful input of students.
The 2022 Academic Affairs Summer Meeting—took place July 21–24, in Portland, Oregon— and explored the theme “Through the Eyes of Students: Leading the Student-Centered Campus.”
In recent years, colleges and universities, striving to be “student-ready,” have become more responsive to the needs of their students to help them succeed. As a result of this student success work, they have become more attuned to the voices of their students. As the student body on many campuses continues to be more diverse than the faculty, staff, and leadership of the campus, it is more important than ever to have reliable and consistent ways of listening to the diversity of student voices.

Free pre-conference workshops give attendees the opportunity to discuss timely and important topics, and to gain actionable strategies. While completing your conference registration, please select the workshops you’d like to attend below.
12:30–2:30 p.m.
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS |
Strengthening Democracy: Putting Students at the Center
This is a treacherous moment for democracy in America. The dangerous polarization and divisions that we see throughout our country are being played out on our campuses. Students are being asked to navigate an increasingly polarized landscape where they feel isolated and disconnected from democratic structures and where partisanship and misinformation impedes their ability to address key public policy issues and be fully engaged citizens. Join us as for a hands-on workshop to discuss strategies, programming, and resources to help you tackle the greatest challenges to our democracy and provide opportunities to engage students, so they are equipped with the knowledge, skills and experiences to be informed and engaged, ready to tackle current and future societal issues and create a more equitable democracy.

Academic Program Evaluation: Impact on DEI
Facilitated by Gray Associates This session will summarize best practices in program evaluation and management and address an often-overlooked aspect of program evaluation: the impact of program choices on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will illustrate the demographic imbalances by program and their effects on student success and institutional finances. We will suggest a formula to track progress on DEI throughout the student lifecycle from admissions, through program selection, graduation, and employment outcomes. We will share a comprehensive model institutions can use to estimate the cost of implementing an equitable student success initiative and explore measurement of equity in your academic portfolio.

The session will draw on evidence-based practices and lessons learned to date through the Aspen-AASCU Transfer Intensive. Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of how they may work with potential two-year partners to improve and make more equitable the transfer student experience.
